Rough Water

First graders viewed several works of art that depict boats on rough waves. They used different types of lines to show movement, and added a boat. After the drawing was complete, the image was copied in Sharpie and painted using different values of blue. 

Oil Pastel Giraffes

First graders followed a step by step guided drawing to create these whimsical giraffes They were allowed to color them however they wanted, using oil pastels. 

First Grade Dandelion Wishes

First Grade Dandelion Wishes

Blow the dandelion and make a wish! First graders used collage for the center of the dandelion and applied the seeds with a cotton swab. Lastly they added the stem with green paint. Each girl made a wish, that was added to the bottom of the painting. 

Collage and Crayon Resist in outer space

First grade had so much fun making these out of this world art. First they created their universe. We discussed space and how things that are closer are bigger than things that are far away. They used crayons, then painted the background with black watercolor paint. Lastly they used construction paper to design their own rocket that would be blasting off into space.

Owl Symmetry

Owl Symmetry

This was a great way to have successful symmetry projects with little ones. I gave them a sheet with half the owl drawn and the other half with "clues" to where the rest goes. They were then asked to color it to keep it symmetrical. 

Stocking Caps

First grade used resist to add patterns to these winter stocking caps. I gave them tracers of the caps, which they traced onto white paper. They then added patterns with white crayons--remember to put pressure on the crayon to make it very waxy. Next, they chose a color of watercolor to paint their hats. Lastly they cut out the hats and used tissue paper to make the pom pom on top (small torn pieces, glued to the top). Each hat was glued to black paper and the negative space was colored.
